Subject Matter: Teacher candidates have a strong knowledge of the subject matter they will teach and can facilitate the acquisition of that knowledge in their students.
While working on my bachelors degree at Dixie State College, I took classes that would certify me with an English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement. This artifact provides evidence of subject matter (DM3) because I will be able to adapt the subject matter for all students in my class, including ESL students. I created lesson plans based upon theĀ Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) which would be very beneficial for ESL students. I think this artifact provides evidence that an ESL Endorsement is crucial to subject matter. I created this ESL Requirements checklist to show evidence that I completed the required courses for an ESL endorsement.
In March of 2009 I took the Elementary Education: Content Knowledge Praxis test. I received a passing score on the test. This artifact provides evidence of subject matter (DM3) because it shows that I have an understanding of the subject matter that I will be teaching to my students. The test consists of 4 content areas. They are Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. I feel that by passing this test it shows that I will be able to teach the subject matter necessary for my students.
